Lovett Whitelaw has a relentless eye for detail and an insatiable appetite for understanding how things work. It’s those very qualities that earned him a Physics degree from Edinburgh University, and which have paved the way for his highly productive television career. His story begins with Videotron, pioneers of the interactive television system that’s commonly found on Freeview and Sky. Lovett produced and directed interactive tie-ins for ITV's London Tonight, the Channel 4 series Wanted, and major events for the Eurosport channel.
Realising that he’s a self taught creative designer, Avid™ editor, and software trainer, the BBC made him the resident expert for their newly acquired graphics technology. Professionally it was an enormous privilege that gave him the freedom to network within the Corporation and produce material for its national and international outlets. It was at the BBC’s Broadcast and Presentation Division that Lovett’s skills as a first rate producer of on air promotions was first recognised, and it wasn’t too long before he was snapped up by the business channel CNBC to handle a series of high profile and creative projects. He produced, directed, and edited promotional material that was syndicated across CNBC’s European and Far East divisions.
In 2000 Lovett decided to focus exclusively on editing, and spent much of his time at the BBC’s News and Current Affairs department working for such award winning programmes as Newsnight, the twenty four hour channel News 24, and BBC World Service Television.
In 2005 Lovett saw how the technological trend was gradually moving away from Avid - his main editing platform for over 10 years - towards a new baby from Apple…Final Cut Pro. But rather than simply embrace the new technology and continue as before, he chose to build his core skills around this new phenomenon. It was a wise decision because Lovett is now an Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro. Although he has a busy schedule, he manages to balance his freelance editing contracts with training bookings from amateurs and professionals, eager to get to grips with Final Cut.
When he isn’t in an edit suite or a training room, you’ll find Lovett playing squash, skiing, running, practising his French conversation skills, or renovating his properties.
