Linette Tye is an experienced broadcast journalist and presenter whose TV news and current affairs background has taken her to BBC Television, British Sky Broadcasting, Mediacorp News, and the independent sector. She has also been a television skills trainer with Media Training Masterclasses Ltd, providing crisis management training and executive coaching to a wide range of global organisations.
Linette began her career with the Television Corporation of Singapore as a Producer/Presenter for the primetime consumer affairs programme Feedback. Her incisive reporting soon earned her a place on the network news team where she researched and packaged news reports, conducted interviews, and presented daily news bulletins. Within four years she became one of the station’s leading anchorwomen and presented the flagship show News at 9pm. Linette reported on both the 1988 and 1991 Singapore General Elections and was one of the core presenters who handled their rolling coverage of the 1990 Gulf War. In addition, the US news channel CNN regularly featured Linette as a reporter on their popular global news show CNN World Report. In 1989, a public poll by the luxury goods group Cartier and Her World magazine named her ‘Woman Newscaster of the Year’.
In 1993, Linette joined BBC World Service Television News in London where she presented World Business Report, World News and Asia Today. It wasduring this time that she also became a familiar face to British viewers through co-anchoring the strand Business Breakfast, and the evening news programme for the Greater London area, Newsroom Southeast. As a documentary reporter she covered Asian Affairs and controversial issues like human trafficking.
In 1999, she was headhunted by MediaCorp and helped launch its rolling news feed, Channel NewsAsia (CNA). Headquartered in Singapore, Channel NewsAsia reports from the major Asian and key Western cities, including New York, Washington D.C, London and Moscow. Its programmes are viewed in more than 20 territories across Asia, from the Middle East to Australia, Japan to India. Linette covered major stories around the world including the Paddington Rail Disaster, and anchored CNA’s primetime shows News World and Business Tonight, for which she was nominated for “Best News Presenter” by the Asian Television Awards panel.
It wasn’t long before she was snapped up by British Sky Broadcasting which used her skills and in-depth knowledge of business issues to enhance their financial coverage. She eventually returned to the BBC where she helped set up the Corporation’s live business TV broadcasts in Singapore. For three years Linette presented Asia Business Report, with four live editions broadcast to BBC World’s global audience every weekday.
She then joined the corporate communications consultancy, Cyan Communications Ltd, as Director of Marketing. With offices in London and New York, Cyan commissions and publishes self-development and business books under various imprints, including Cyan Books and Cyan Marshall Cavendish Business. During her time there, Cyan was named “one of the UK’s Top 10 Independent Publishers” [Bookseller magazine, Dec 2005], whilst its branding/marketing title, ‘Wizard: Harry Potter’s Brand Magic’, was chosen by The Chartered Institute of Marketing as their favourite book of the year [The Marketer annual review 2005/2006].
Linette studied Cognitive Psychology and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. She also holds a Master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies from the Diplomatic Academy of London, as well as a City & Guilds certificate in Computer Programming and Information Processing. She is a member of 26, a not-for-profit organization for writers, editors and designers, which aims to show how experienced and imaginative writers can find new and credible ways to engage their audiences.
A highly respected and much sought after speaker, Linette has been profiled in entertainment television specials and featured in numerous magazines including Tatler, The Edge and Peak. She has mediated/hosted company events, conferences and forums including the 2001 Global Summit for Women and the 2002 & 2003 SME of the Year Awards.
